About Founded in 1966, HSI is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the culture and unique history of Schaefferstown and greater southeastern Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Mission Historic Schaefferstown, Inc.’s mission is the collection, preservation, study, and dissemination of the history and folk culture of the Pennsylvania Germans in South Central Pennsylvania, with particular focus on Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. The organization provides information through educational programs for adults and children, tours of its buildings and collections, festivals and special events, and publications of research and promotional materials. Our Histor y Founded in 1966, Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the culture and unique history of Schaefferstown and greater southeastern Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania German and Swiss cultures which flourished here during the last few centuries are authentically presented among several historic sites – the Alexander Schaeffer House and Farm , the Thomas R. Brendle Museum , and the Gemberling-Rex House . Throughout the year, our sites host cultural events designed to educate in experiential, memorable ways. Our directors and volunteers work to restore, preserve and maintain our historic properties and museum collections. Our work is supported by charitable donations , public and private grants, event fees, member dues and volunteer services. Funding supports educational tours and events, restoration efforts, archaeological projects, our museum and properties, the Young Villagers Program, classes, workshops, and preservation of our unique history through various projects.

Throughout the year, Historic Schaefferstown hosts special speaker events, workshops and classes, festivals held at the historic Alexander Schaeffer Farm, Christkindlmarkt and a Tavern lunch. THE BRENDLE MUSEUM WILL BE OPEN (April through September) TUESDAYS 1 - 4 PM AND ON THE 1ST SUNDAY of each month 1 - 4 PM *An additional tour of the Rex House can be included - Rex House is under construction at the moment. (or actually under restoration and repair. ) Alexander Schaeffer Farm This 18th century house, a National Historic Landmark, Is located on a scenic 85-acre farm south of the village of Schaefferstown. The site hosts living history cultural events and educational tours. The house once belonged to Alexander Schaeffer, founder of Schaefferstown. At one time, the home house a distillery in its basement. Gemberling-Rex House The Gemberling - Rex house Is on the National Register of Historic Homes. This 18th century tavern once served travelers and villagers. Original features Inckude a bar cage and Franklin fireplace. The Rex House just underwent a major restoration thanks to an anonymous donor. The roof was recently restored and replaced with authentic wooden shingles. The Brendle Museum Take a step back in time and visit our Museum. Named for a local resident and leader in the preservation of PA German folklore, the museum displays cultural artifacts from the region. The museum has many archives, photos, and historical treasures. Our staff also creates specific displays and plans Historical Speaker Events throughout the year. Guided Tours Available Museum Tours: Generally, HSI sites are available for tours from April through October each year. The Alexander Schaeffer House, a National Historic Landmark, on the Schaeffer farm is open only on farm festival days and by private appointment. To schedule a tour for your group, please call 717-949-2244.The Gemberling Rex House (also on the Historic List) and the Brendle Museum are open for tours 1pm to 4pm every Tuesday and on the first Saturday of each month (June through early October). No appointment necessary. When planning your visit, please be mindful that our museum buildings were constructed many years ago and may not be fully accessible for individuals with physical challenges — there are stairs to ascend, uneven original floors, restroom limits, etc Admission Fees:HSI Members: Free (during regular museum hours)Non-Members Age 12 or Older: $5.00 per museum Supervised children under age 12 admitted free with a paying adult or member.Additional donations appreciated. Photography If you wish to visit the historic Schaeffer Farm or other HSI site on your own to capture personal or professional images of any kind, please obtain HSI’s approval before you visit. HSI Photography Policy: Please contact our office (717-949-2244) to request permission at least 4 days in advance. Leave a message if no one answers. Provide details of your planned times of entry and exit of property. Shoot up to 1 hour maximum: $25.00 donation requested Shoot up to 3 hour maximum: $50.00 donation requested Shoot up to 6 hour maximum (full day): $100.00 donation requested. Professional photographers must sign a formal agreement. HSI will provide authorized name tag and pass as detailed in the Agreement. Request full details when you call. Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. will not be responsible for any loss or injuries that may occur during the time participants are on the property. Professional photographers must have valid business liability insurance. Photographs obtained may not be used in any resale materials — books, postcards, calendars, shows, etc. without prior expressed written permission from HSI.
